I was lucky enough to meet Mark through Bob Korman over 15 years ago, for business stuff. I was his webmaster, and we became friends as a result, with me doing his personal website (for Catnip Hollow Bison) and his business one. I traded him processed bison meat for the work, and Mark was super generous every year, sending me a huge box of summer sausage, jerky and steaks. This went on for more than a decade, and I grew to know Mark as a compassionate, skilled Vet, and a super cool guy to boot. Bob brought me to spend the weekend with Mark and Sheryl at Catnip Hollow, and their hospitality and warmth stay among my favorite memories. He tried to get me down to fish in Costa Rica, and I am very regretful that it never happened – but that is my only true regret in knowing Mark. I was shocked and horrified by the news of his passing and will miss him every time I think of him – but I will also celebrate him every time I think of him, too. There simply isn’t anyone better out there, and I was lucky to get to know Mark as well as I did. Godspeed my friend – I’ll see you in another bison field somewhere, I am absolutely sure of it.

Mark took me on as a veterinary assistant, and simultaneously as a friend, back in 1998. He fed my interest and knowledge in emergency and critical care medicine as well as wildlife rehabilitation. His compassion for the animals, as well as their humans (if they had any) was incredibly inspiring. I came to work all of Mark’s shifts with him. He put his trust and confidence in my abilities and me as a person. This is what he did for many. He was always inspired and intrigued by other people’s skills, abilities, talents and approaches to life. I’m pretty certain I could write a book at this point. Suffice it to say that I will miss him dearly. I will always cherish our work, travel, bison round-ups and general leisure time together.
